Butte is a picturesque place to reside and recreate and offers year-round outdoor recreation. One of the finest amenities the Butte area has to offer is its location. Butte-Silver Bow is situated on the west slopes of the Continental Divide in the spectacular Rocky Mountains. Its setting offers unspoiled wilderness, spectacular views, unlimited outdoor recreational opportunities, and a genuine Montana way of life. An additional benefit to living and working in the Butte area is the 280 plus days of sunshine that is enjoyed each year.

Butte’s urban setting offers miles of recreational trails that connect parks and recreation facilities throughout the community as well as provide access and interpretation of its many historic sites. The Butte area is known statewide for its youth activities, sporting programs and facilities for organized sports of all seasons – football, basketball, golf, soccer, ice-skating, tennis, youth and semi-pro ice hockey and wrestling.

In less than fifteen minutes in any direction you can enjoy Montana’s natural beauty, forests and majestic peaks on state and federal parklands where wildlife is abundant, and bird watching has never been better. Enjoy a day hiking, exploring, camping, fishing, golfing, or just relaxing. Cross-country skiing and mountain biking trails are plentiful, while off-road vehicle enthusiasts can find miles of forest to explore on designated trails. A downhill skiing experience is less than an hour away.

The Big Hole River, thirty minutes away, is one of Montana's best, with a natural diversity that's hard to match. It hosts rainbow, brown, cutthroat and brook trout and also offers great floating and kayaking experiences. Other Blue Ribbon streams are found in the Butte area – the Beaverhead, Ruby, Madison, Jefferson, as well as Rock Creek.

  • Butte-Silver Bow has four golf courses: one private 18-hole, one public 18 hole, one municipal 9-hole, and one municipal par 3 9-hole course. There is also a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, Old Works, in Anaconda located 12 miles from Butte.
  • The county has 30 public parks, 24 public and five private tennis courts, and one public swimming pool.
  • A private country club is also available.
  • The nearest public access river is is 25 miles away with swimming and fishing allowed
  • There are 7 ski resorts within 3 hours of Butte.
  • The county has eight indoor theater screens and two outdoor theater screens.
  • There are three health club facilities in the county.
  • The United States High Altitude Sports Center, an outdoor Olympic-sized speed skating oval, is open to the public when not in use by the U.S. National Speed Skating Team.
  • The county has nine public indoor skating rinks and one dedicated outdoor hockey rink.
  • Butte-Silver Bow Civic Center has seating capacity ranging from 3,500 to 6,000 depending on the event. The facility is equipped for figure skating, hockey, basketball, wrestling, musical concerts, high school graduations, trade fairs, annual stockholders meetings, etc.
  • A total of five softball fields, five Babe Ruth baseball fields, five Little League baseball fields, and five Major League baseball fields are maintained by the county.
