Municipal Services

  • Butte-Silver Bow has operated as a consolidated city/county government since 1977. A city/county zoning ordinance in effect; a comprehensive city/county plan was completed in 1971 and updated in 1986.
  • The municipality is served by 33 full time and 350 volunteer fire department personnel over nine districts. Butte-Silver Bow is in fire insurance Class 5.
  • The number of local law enforcement officers totals 38. In addition, a total of three Highway Patrol officers and four supervisory staff are assigned to the county.
  • The city/county engineer is employed by Butte-Silver Bow.
  • Public garbage collection services are provided.
  • Butte-Silver Bow is served by two libraries: the Butte Public Library with approximately 75,000 volumes, and the library at Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology with 49,929 volumes, 78,446 maps, and 425,636 documents, which include paper, microfilm, and electronic media.
  • 95 percent of the county's streets are paved.

Other Services

  • Tool and dies service is available in the county as is electric motor repair. Machine shops total four.
  • A daily newspaper is published in Butte-Silver Bow. Six local commercial radio stations serve the county and public radio is received via translator.
  • Three television channels are received without cable; 35 with cable.
  • The Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce operates with a full-time manager.
  • Churches total 42 in the county, 34 of which are Protestant, six are Catholic, one is Jewish, and one is Latter Day Saints.
  • Motels and hotels number 15 in Butte-Silver Bow, comprising a total of 1,332 rooms.
